Habba Khatoon: The Nightingale of Kashmir

The historical accounts of Kashmir contains the vibrant touch of beauty, love, and artistic intelligence. In its distinguishing features, it does not lack any rubies but some appear to be larger never mind the rest – **Habba Khatoon**, the so called “Nightingale of Kashmir”. This queen-poetess of sixteenth century is known in history books and is someone who through her life and poetry has been shaping generations and even now does.

 Early Life and Humble Beginnings

Kashmiri women who claimed to be Called Zoon resided in the once standing village of Panmura, situated in the vally of Pampore, and embraced the surrounding breathtaking hills of gardens and flowers. According to my keener understanding of her being and nature loving passion, she learnt to shape her poetic words through nature from an early age. Given her upbringing Khatoon was not dded intelligent, her poor family background shouldn't have hindered her intelligent mind. This creative lady however has an innate blessing of patterning her wordings.

At such young age, which seemed to be annihilated by tempestous circumstances, she had to sacrifice herself and her dreams for a husband. This situation did not bring much satisfaction for her which is why she directed all of her disdain and displeasure to lyric writing or rather poetic compositions which captured her pain.

 From Zoon to Habba Khatoon

Zoon's life had a dramatic twist when she caught the attention of *Yusuf Shah Chak*, the then ruler of Kohistian, with her voice. Zoon’s songs and wisdom enchanted Yusuf, and he thus married her contemporarily making Zoon mic to praises.
