Allama Iqbal: The Poet of The East and The Thinker

Life and Work: Among many notable figures in South Asian history, Allama Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938) is one of the most prominent ones. A self-proclaimed philosopher, politician, and poet, Iqbal’s work holds relevance even today, across various cultures, timelines, and places. His concepts of self-objectification, self-revelation and revival of Islamic ideology have hundreds of millions of believers even today.  

Life and Education:

Allama Iqbal, a former British Indian, now Pakistani was born to a kashmiri brahmin family who converted to Islam many generations ago. Since his childhood, Allama Iqbal exhibited signs of great intellectual capacity. Iqbal completed his early education in Sialkot from where he went to Lahore and afterwards to the USA and completed his degrees in philosophy and literature from Government College.  

Upon an urge to further expand his education, Iqbal travelled to Europe where he acquired a doctorate degree from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and went on to study law at London’s Lincoln’s Inn. During the period that he spent in Europe, Iqbal was largely affected by western philosophy but never let its ideations overshadow his Islamic spirituality and culture.
